Veteran Support (2024)

Trupanion is honored to work with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to help Veterans receive veterinary care for their approved service dogs.

Veteran Support (1)

We work in tandem with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to assist veterans and their service dogs

Veterans may take their approved service dogs to any veterinarian throughout the United States and all US territories. We will pay all eligible expenses including check-ups, medical care, and emergencies.

How it works

Veteran Support (2)

The VA determines eligibility

The VA has sole control over determining the eligibility of veterans and their service dogs. Once approved, the VA provides the veteran and service dog information to Trupanion to enroll them. All information is kept confidential.

Veteran Support (3)

Trupanion administers the program

We enroll approved service dogs in the program, provide veterans with information about the program and how it works, and pay the veterinary bills for all eligible expenses. We have no control over who is approved for the program.

Veteran Support (4)

Veterinarians provide expert health care to eligible service dogs

Once the appointment is over, the clinic just needs to fax or email us the cover sheet with the finalized invoice. We pay 100% of all coverable expenses within 48 hours of receiving the complete invoice.

Program overview

Veterans enrolled in this program may take their service dog to any veterinarian in the United States and US territories, including emergency and specialty hospitals. We provide payment directly to the clinic, so the veterans don't need to pay for these services out of pocket.

Veterans do not need to contact us prior to taking their dog to the veterinarian, though it's helpful to know if the veteran has a regular clinic so we can reach out and let them know how the program works.
