Overview (2024)

Join the program

If you are interested in the program, please contact the department of rehabilitation and prosthetics services at your local VA Medical Center. They will coordinate with the program’s COR to determine your service dog’s eligibility. Trupanion is unable to enroll veterans who are not approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We have no control over who is eligible or approved for the program.

Enjoy the program

Once the VA approves you for the program, Trupanion will send you a welcome kit containing items that identify you and your service dog as participants of this program.

  • A Trupanion-issued ID card for your service dog. Your policy number and our dedicated 24/7 support phone number are on the card.
  • A Trupanion dog ID tag. Our phone number is on the tag, along with an identification number for your service dog. This identification number can also help return your service dog to you if they get lost. If your dog is found, we will contact you directly, without disclosing any information about you.
  • Program welcome letter. This letter confirms your acceptance in this program and is acceptable as proof you are part of the program.
  • Claim cover sheet. This form can be provided to your veterinarian to assist them in submitting claims on your behalf.

You can present any of these items to the veterinary staff when you check in for a visit to identify you as part of the program.

If you do not have any of these items, your veterinarian can call us directly at 855.482.0163 and we can confirm you are in the program. We are also more than happy to talk to them about the program, review what is covered, and explain the payment options.

For veterinarians

Trupanion makes it easy for veterans to obtain veterinary care for their approved service dog by paying your clinic directly for treatment.

Approved veterans receive the following items from us that identify them as part of the program:

  • A Trupanion-issued insurance ID card
  • A Trupanion-issued dog ID tag for their service dog
  • A program welcome letter

If the veteran doesn’t have any of these items with them at the appointment, please give us a call and we can verify that they are part of the program. We would be happy to provide you additional information about the program upon request.

Receive payment

We will send you payment via electronic fund transfer(credit card) or check, whichever you prefer.

After you have treated a service dog, fax or email us your invoice using our cover sheet. We recommend you make copies of this so you have them available for each invoice you send. We are able to send you a digital copy by email upon request.

The cover sheet provides space for you to tell us the nature of the visit, as well as space for the hospital’s contact information and the service dog’s information and payment preference.

Within 48 hours of receiving the invoice and the completed cover sheet, we will mail you a check or transfer the payment electronically.

Please note the default payment method is check.

You can review what is eligible for coverage in our program overview.

If you have any questions about how the program works, what is covered, or how payment is issued, we are happy to help. Our team is available 24/7 at 855.482.0163.
