Previously on Call from the Deep

Starring:
Gotwald Ironhorn, level 8 minotaur Rune Knight Fighter
Mac, level 8 tortle Drakewarden Ranger/Rogue
Savra Akkedis, level 8 lizardfolk School of Necromancy Wizard
Torrel, level 8 kenku Fathomless Warlock Pact of the Amulet/Fighter

The alerted guard barges through the doorway, barreling Mac over the railing and sending the tortle crashing into the floor below (player couldn’t make the session). On the flip side, Torrel finally bursts out of a different crate and quickly runs up to join the party (absent player returns!).

A new fight was on versus the guards patrolling the outside platform and ship. But the party would soon discover they were more than meets the eye.

Gotwald reacts first, and embiggens, followed by punching, grabbing, and throwing the guard over the same railing, then leaping down after him!

“I’ve got this one,” he gleefully yells to the others.

Savra and Torrel head outside onto the rickety platform surrounding the crane. It’s so rickety, everyone has to make DEX saves every time they move.

Torrel falls prone to steady himself, but he’s adept at range attacking, summoning his tentacle and firing off eldritch blasts.

Savra walks carefully and begins dumping spells at the enemy guards, including wither and bloom, shatter, and witch bolt.

The guards hurl javelins at the spellcasters with shocking strength that betrays their true forms.

A fourth guard emerges from the crane and cuts into Savra with his battleaxe. The poor wizard is forced to burn several spell slots on shield spells.

Meanwhile Gotwald is making good progress on the first guard, even if the bastard has a lot more hit points than he expected.

After a vicious punch, the guard’s mouth splits open, and transforms. It’s a deep scion!

Call from the Deep Session 35: The Styes p4 (1)

The fishy terror uses its psychic screech to stun Gotwald, then lopes up the stairs and toward the others, where it tries to attack Torrel from behind.

Gotwald shakes off his stupor and rushes after him, grabbing the wounded deep scion and punching it off the platform into a gravity-assisted death.

Torrel knocks the axe-swinging guard off with an eldritch blast, and kills another by sending it off the back of the boat railing.

Gotwald, seeing the platform nearly buckle under his enlarged form, quickly jumps onto the boat.

At the same time, the last scion transforms, leaps onto the platform, and stuns all three of them. It nearly kills Savra with three nasty attacks, but the others rally and put the monster down.

The battle ends and the party catches their breath with a short rest. Savra is forced to spend nearly all her hit dice healing back up.

The only access into the ship is through an open grate. A metal trough sends water from a nearby water tower pouring into the ship.

Torrel uses his gem of brightness to see a pool of water below, heated by boilers, with steam rising from within. The water is also befouled with fish blood and guts.

They carefully climb down to avoid the water, and Gotwald kicks open the only door that leads deeper into the ship.

Unfortunately the occupants had heard everything, and were waiting for them.

Call from the Deep Session 35: The Styes p4 (2)

The two deep scions launch into a surprise attack on Gotwald, raking him with teeth and claw, while the slimy, mutated Mr. Dory casts Evard’s black tentacles on all three party members.

After getting restrained by a nasty tentacle, Savra teleports her and Torrel into the next room with thunderous step, which hilariously does a ton of damage to poor Gotwald, and earns her MVPC!

Gotwald is also restrained and forced to heal while the deep scions attack with advantage, but Savra makes up for it by teleporting him out with vortex warp.

Savra is finally running low on her bazillion and one spell slots.

Torrel summons his tentacle and goes after Mr. Dory, while Gotwald keeps a scion busy.

Mr. Dory misses a thunderbolt strike on Gotwald, than uses Voice of the Kraken to frighten everyone.

But Torrel shrugs it off and casts banishment. It doesn’t take the first time, but the following round he tries again, sending Mr. Dory screaming into another plane of existence.

With the spellcaster down, Torrel can help defeat the two scions. Gotwald and Savra both get down to about 10-20% hit points remaining before the vicious creatures are killed.

Torrel warns that banishment only lasts a minute, prompting the party to get into a position to unleash hell when the melty-man returns.

Sure enough, he pops back in with Torrel using his tentacular arm, Gotwald swinging his anchor axe, and Savra using a scroll of blight to deal over 50 damage!

Mr. Dory immediately falls to his knees as a bloody mess and quickly surrenders, ready to spill his guts, so to speak.

MVPC – Savra
