Wartales Class Tier List - All Classes, Ranked (2024)

No matter how big you want your Warband to be in Wartales, getting the right mix of the seven classes is the key to success. So whether you’re going big or small, read on for my Wartales class tier list, ranking all the classes in the game.

Class Tier List - All Wartales Classes, Ranked

It’s important to note that the best class in Wastales depends on whether you’re going Adaptive or Region-locked. If you play in adaptive mode, you can build a party of the size that suits your playstyle, while in region-locked, you’ll slowly need to increase the party size to meet the tougher demands of larger groups.

S TierPugilist
A TierBrute, Ranger, Warrior
B TierSwordsman, Spearman
C TierArcher

I’ll also note here that there’s no such thing as a ‘best’ class in Wartlaes, as it's about getting the best synergy in your team to suit your playstyle. However, it's also fair to say not all classes were created equally. These are my personal preferences, having played through all of the game’s content (including the DLC). finally, if you have a large band, it is worth getting every class to make sure you can take advantage of all the legendary weapons you find, as they are all class-specific.

7. Archer (C-Tier)

In a warband of more than 20 units, I only have one archer. He has been with me since the very start of my campaign and does a job, but I’ve never felt as if he has won me a battle. The archer is the only genuinely long-range unit in Wartales, but this is less of an issue in a game where you can make up distances quickly. They’re always squishy, put out average damage, and have a set of specials that tend to rely on the right conditions. They’re also the unit type most likely to hit their teammates, so are a bit of a liability.

Also, if you want to control your animal units in battle, having at least one archer with Beast Mastery (level five skill) is essential.

6. Swordsman (B-Tier)

The swordsman is your classic tank unit, able to go full defensive with a sword and shield or more aggressive with a two-hander. They’re also useful for some group buffs, but generally, I don’t feel they do anything that can’t be done better by one of the other tanky melee classes. I’ll always have one, though, and a couple later, as they get Riposte and Heavy Armor, making them perfect to put on the toughest units you’re facing in each fight. But you’ll be relying on the rest of your troop to get the job done around them.

5. Spearman (B-Tier)

I’ll take a spearman over an archer almost every time. If you take Harpooner at level three, you’ll have a unit that can wear medium armor, attack through one of your engaged units from behind without penalty or risk, and do a ranged attack that hits all enemies in a row. You can also make them unstoppable at level 10, allowing them to move through enemy ranks. You can also upgrade them defensively or offensively through the skill system, making them much more flexible than the archer.

4. Brute (A-Tier)

While there’s not a lot to choose between the brute and swordsman classes, I tend to prefer the brute due to the vanguard’s Relentless Charge ability. I’d say this ability gets put to good use in every battle I fight in, allowing you to disengage without penalty, gain extra movement, and move through enemy units, damaging them as you do so. This is an absolute game-changer.

It does mean they can only use medium armor, but this flexibility more than makes up for it. Give them a two-hander, and you can cause absolute mayhem while knowing you can always get to where you want to be for maximum AOE damage.

3. Ranger (A-Tier)

Before the pugilist class came along in the DLC patch, the ranger was my favorite class in Wartales. It’s, in essence, the thief class, allowing you to backstab and poison enemies for some huge damage. They can also carry torches easily as they only use a one-handed weapon and don’t need a shield. This is very useful for battles in tombs, where creatures you fight will be a lot stronger if fighting in the dark.

They're squishy but relatively easy to keep out of harm’s way. Get your tanks engaged, get the rangers in behind the engaged enemies, and your battles should be swift and victorious.

2. Warrior (A-Tier)

The warrior is my favorite frontline troop type in Wartales. If you go sentinel at level three, you can give them heavy armor and riposte, matching the swordsman but with more interesting skills going forward. I prefer to go berserker though, as the associated Rampage attack does big damage and gives Fury, meaning you’ll do even more damage on your next attack.

This is a great perk in a game where hits always tend to land. With medium armor and a shield, they tank well, relying on finishing off the enemy quickly rather than hanging around in a tough tin can.

1. Pugilist (S-tier)

The pugilist class was introduced at the same time as the Belerion DLC. With light or medium armor and no shield option, they’re a little squishy, but that’s their only downside. Their ability to switch stances each round, giving their attacks different bonuses, makes them wonderfully versatile. They do more damage than any other class, while their level 12 Thrashing bravery skill can take down almost anything in the game in one hit. They get Unstoppable at level 10, making them move around the battlefield with ease.
