This is a goldmine of knowledge about raising money for an early stage company.I spend a fair bit of time on LinkedInā¦And in that time Iāve been saving some of the best content and the sharpest insights. These are the most insightful charts, graphs andcheatsheetsI've seen on raising money.1. Your Chances of Becoming a Unicorn According to CB Insights, they are less than 1%. Ouch. This graphic came from a post from Simona Alice Huebl (who is super sharp!).She added that:ā 40% raised a second round of fundingā The median Seed size disclosed was $500Kā 225 (22%) exited through M&A or IPO within 6 roundsā Only 9 companies (0.9%) reached a value of $1B+Follow her. She posts great content about venturecapital.2. The Importance of Angels in the Investor EcosystemMy friend Mudassir Mustafa posted this great graphic from Carta which showed the impact of angels in the investment ecosystem.Knowing how to find angels, what theyāre looking for and how they can help your business is very important.Follow Mudassir. He posts excellent, high quality content.3. How Geography Impacts Your Investment ChancesThe sad reality is that if youāre in the Bay Area, youāve got a far higher chance of getting funded.Anothersheetfrom Carta, this time shared by Peter Walker, highlights the geographical bias for SF, Boston, NYC, LAā¦If you aināt in one of these cities, itās pretty tough to get the green.4. The Ultimate InvestorCheatSheetThis monster PDF from Evan H Fisher is a comprehensive, end-to-end guide for raising capital.Download this via his website (go to his profile) so you can view it properly.I canāt recommend this highly enough. Evan has packed so much great info in here.āFollow these people.Repost this ā»ļø if you think itās helpful to entrepreneurs everywhere.

Re: point #1, I would add for the founders out there, it's OK not to be a unicorn (though don't admit that when pitching). Creating a 500m company or even a 100m company from a 0 starting point is still super impressive and will still make you money. Look at all the public companies with market caps below $1bil, still tons of legit. Not evry company can be the fab 4, fab 6, FANG etc.

There are so many good ideas that just don't get funded when it's outside of "influential zones". Heaps of great people and great ideas in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc. where angel are the only ones that are willing to venture. These ideas get developed and grown to a point where it gets actually interesting for others.

Unless youāre at $100m already uttering Unicorn seemsā¦silly. Best I ever did for someone was give them and others their āF off money ā which Iād never heard of. Not plane money. But donāt have do anything you donāt want to money. That was due to stock peaking at $11 from 0.35. Broke unicorn for a month ish. Within two years after .. gone. So itās relative and emphemeral. Iām certain I would have been bludgeoned for ever thinking much less uttering that occurance ever be possible. Esp to a shareholder. āSet the bozo bitā in old time nerd.

Here are 4 Laws of Power lessons for the week.As Iāve said before, this is my FAVORITE book and one which I recommend to everyone. To win the battle one must carefully employ strategyā¦.Law 8: Make Other People Come to YouIt is always wise to make your opponent come to you, and have them abandon their own plans in the process.Fight the battle on your turf. When you force the other person to act, you are the one in control.Lure them into your territory with a potential victory, then attack.Law 31: Control the OptionsGet others to play with the cards you deal.Rig the game.Change the playing field in your favor.Your opponents will get a false sense of control, but you will come out on top regardless of which option they choose.Law 4: AlwaysSay Less Than NecessaryPersons who cannot control his words shows that he cannot control himself, and is unworthy of respect. But the human tongue is a beast that few can master. It strains constantly to break out of its cage, and if it is not tamed, it will run wild and cause you grief.Law 5: So Much Depends onReputation. Guard it with Your Life.Once you have a solid base of respect, ridiculing your opponent both puts him on the defensive and draws more attention to you, enhancing your own reputation.Happy MONDAY!!!

What do I read to stay sharp? I just follow the moneyā¦ā£ā£For those thirsty for more insights we are now bringing you:ā£ā£Finance Bro Fridays šā£ā£Last week we posted on two topics:ā£ā£ ā Looming debt maturities in Cannabisā£ā£ā GTIās letter to Sam (and what I would have done differently)ā£ā£This week Bengal Capital published their Q3 newsletter and Gerald Derevyanny provides a MASTERCLASS in debt capital market analytics.ā£ā£Sanjay Tolia and his team at Bengal are some of the smartest investors in cannabis.ā£ā£Their takeaways:ā£ā£ā Who is going to win cannabis? Green Thumb Industries (GTI)ā£ā£ā Why? Look at their cost of capitalā£ā£ā Whatās coming? More players like thisā¦ā£ā£ā What should you do? Buy stock in GTI and stop complaining (just thank me when your kid's 529 plan doubles by 2029)ā£ā£And on the subject of the GTI x The Boston Beer Company mergerā¦ā£ā£So GTI sent a letter expressing interest in a merger between the two companies.ā£ā£Interestingly, GTIās stock rallied 6% for the week, while Boston Beer fell 9%.ā£ā£The market is correctly reading that many impediments will likely keep the deal from happening.ā£ā£Boston Beer would have to create a Canopy U.S. type of structure to hold GTI until federal legalization so as not to jeopardize its senior listing.ā£ā£Boston Beer undoubtedly sees the writing on the wall ā declining alcohol sales - but would probably prefer a more straightforward deal.ā£ā£BUTā¦ā£ā£Deals like this are CLEARLY coming.ā£ā£This oneās just a bit premature.

Which east coast native MSO is quietly making BIG waves in the good markets?Nova Farms. For the past 5 years, they've been on a TEAR:ā $64M in 2023 salesā Profitable in exciting and TOUGH marketsā 30+ products with industry awards out the wazooNova is setting a fine example for upstart, private MSOs.They have prioritized low cost, high quality outdoor grown flower. While the rest of the industry zigged on fancy indoor grows, Nova zagged. The result is ridiculously low production costs. They're cranking out gas for $100 a pound. You read that right. And they have done this in opportune and complimentary states using a "Hub & Spoke" model.Big heavy hitting states like MA and NJ are the hubs. Smaller border states of RI, ME and CT are the spokes. This helps them garner major exposure across the northeast region. They have cemented this influence via their popular product brands.Brands like Southie Adams and Sticky Fish are staples across the region. And they fly off the shelves in their own stores too, all of which have a stellar reputation. And they have revenue per sq ft that would make Apple blush.Mark my words:These guys are SERIOUS East Coast players. The team, led by CEO Derek Ross, is HUNGRY.ā They've got $100M in their sights for 2024ā And with a 58% CAGR, $250M won't be far behindSo, who will be the MSO that ponies up and buys Nova?Or are THEY going to be the buyer in the near future?āWhat do you think? Is Nova destined to be the King of the East Coast?

Nothing pisses me off more than ambulance chasing lawyers. When they manipulate people with kids and drugs it's even worseā¦Last week a 15 year old (!) filed a lawsuit claiming STIIIZY has triggered a public health crisis among teensby āmarketing dangerous, high potencymarijuana vaporizersā to youth. The lawsuit, filed in Marin County Superior Court, claims Stiiizyās marketing is: Deliberately āaimed at inducing teenagers and young adults to use its product.āAre we in 1933? Are we back to the Devil's Lettuce? Is this going to allow every class action legal team in the US to fire up litigation against us??I posted some of my thoughts on Stiiizy a few weeks back.I gave them props for what they have achieved as a brand and that struck a nerve or two.Hopefully this isn't so controversial. This lawsuit is obviously frivolous. It hurts Stiizy, and it hurts EVERYONE in the cannabis industry. For once, can we ALL AGREE that this is wrong and represents a potential attack on all of us??Let me know what you think in the comments.Repost this one for solidarity ā»ļø
