Steve W. Bedi
Funeral Director
Steve W. Bedi, 80, a funeral director who retired in 1996 after 52 years with Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home in Silver Spring and its predecessor business, died July 26 at a medical center in Carlisle, Pa. He had diabetes.
Mr. Bedi, who moved from his longtime home in Silver Spring to Carlisle in 1994, was a native of St. Peters, Pa.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He entered the funeral business in 1944 when he took a job with the S.H. Hines funeral home in Washington.
The business moved to Silver Spring in the early 1970s.
He was past elder and executive committee member of First Alliance Church in Silver Spring.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Roberta Perry of Carlisle; a son, Dr. Stephen S. Bedi of Upland, Ind.; four sisters; two brothers; two granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.

Mildred A. Underwood
Waitress
Mildred A. Underwood, 90, a retired waitress who worked for the old G.C. Murphy Variety Store in Washington at 12th and G streets NW, died of congestive heart failure July 26 at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax.
Mrs. Underwood began working for Murphy's a few years after the five-and-dime store opened its doors in 1930. She waited tables in the store's 100-seat basem*nt restaurant and worked the lunch counter and snack bar, where the "Famous Murphyburger" gained a wide following.
With the exception of some time to raise a family, she continued to work at Murphy's until 1976.
Mrs. Underwood, who had lived in Oakton since 1954, was born in Leeland, Prince George's County, and raised in Pomfret. She attended schools in La Plata.
She was a member of Oakton United Methodist Church for about 50 years.
Her husband of 58 years, Raymond T. Underwood, died in 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley A. Underwood of Vienna and Warren C. Underwood of Reston; and a sister, Grace Cowan of Bowie.
