"I thought Callie was a cat person?" Chris questions suspiciously, but I can tell that he is intrigued by the slight tilt of his lips.

"She'll get over it!" I bounce on the balls of my feet as I grab Chris' forearm. "Please, please, please can we get a dog? You know Matt will be on my side!"

Chris laughs and throws an arm over my shoulders to steer us towards the elevator. "We'll talk about it."

"That basically means yes." I beam at him as I cuddle into his side, twisting my arm around his back to give him a side hug.

"You're relentless," Chris chuckles, pressing a quick kiss to the top of my head. "So what about this surprise?"

I laugh mischievously, causing Chris' eyebrows to shoot up sceptically. "You'll find out."

"So basically what I'm hearing is that you're going to drive me out into the middle of nowhere and kill me."

I shrug indifferently, my smile growing as Chris' frown deepens. "Like I said, you'll find out, Norman."

"No!" Chris groans, playfully shoving me away from him as he reaches to push the elevator button. "I hate you."

"You love me," I state confidently, throwing my arms back around Chris in a bear hug. "And you want to spend the rest of your life with me."

"Not if you keep calling me Norman," Chris grumbles, but I feel his lips round into a smile against my forehead.

"Sorry, Norman," I whisper before tugging out of Chris' hold and darting into the elevator.

Chris shakes his head in disappointment and makes a big show of pushing up the sleeves of his hoodie as he follows me into the elevator. "You're just asking for it, aren't you?"

I tuck myself into the back corner of the elevator and raise my fists in front of me, a huge grin sprawled across my face. "Bring it."

As the elevator doors close behind Chris, he lunges towards me and easily locks my arms against my body so he can tickle me with his free hand.

"Stop f*cking tickling me!" I shriek, kicking my legs out at Chris as my chest heaves with laughter. "You're such an asshole!"

"Agree to never call me Norman again and I'll stop tickling you," Chris laughs, his fingers continuing their assault against my stomach.

I frantically shake my head, unable to form words through my laughter.

"Your funeral," Chris snigg*rs, laughing when I screech loudly.

The elevator dings as it reaches the main floor, and the doors open to reveal three women, their eyes all widening in horror at the sight of Chris pressing me against the elevator wall.

Chris clears his throat and grabs my hand before stepping away from me. "Ladies." He nods at them as he leads me out of the elevator, and I avoid their gazes as my lower lip trembles with suppressed laughter.

Only once we exit the hospital into the muggy Boston heat do I explode into giggles. "Ladies? Are you f*cking serious?"

Chris shrugs, his grin wider than I've seen it in a while. "I didn't see you saying anything."

"Because you had just been assaulting me!" I shriek, slapping Chris' shoulder.

Without hesitating, Chris bends to scoop me up, throwing me over his shoulder in a fireman's hold to carry me across the parking lot. "You can't yell about assault, Brynlee," he scolds, lightly slapping the back of my thigh.

I groan loudly, but don't put up a fight, simply allowing my body to slump dejectedly as I grip the back of Chris' hoodie to keep me steady. "You're the worst."

Chris' shoulders shake as he laughs, and I shriek again when he slaps my ass. "Gotta keep you on your toes."

"I'm not on my f*cking toes!" I punch his back and shove my dangling hair out of my face when it gets caught in my mouth. "My toes are f*cking flying!"

"You're welcome for the ride." Chris carefully lowers me to the ground and holds my arms when I teeter slightly as I regain my balance.

Once my vision has focused, I scowl at him. "You're insane."

"You love me," Chris repeats my words from earlier and gently grasps my chin to kiss me.

I kiss him back without hesitation, and I can't help but giggle when he pulls away to kiss the tip of my nose. "I guess I love you."

Chris rolls his eyes as he wraps his arm around my shoulders. "I hope so, because you're stuck with me."

"Aw, shucks." I grin up at him, a fizzy feeling of joy filling my chest. "Guess I better change the surprise to something unrelated to murder."

"That would be appreciated," Chris chuckles, letting me go as we reach my car. "You're really not going to tell me what we're doing?"

I beam at him and don't say a word. It's my turn to plan a surprise date, he just needs to wait and see what I've got up my sleeve.
