activating a disaster declaration for several counties in south texas. this morning tropical storm alberto, the first named storm of the season slamming into coastal texas after wreaking havoc in mexico after an above average hurricane season predicted for the atlantic. the large storm hitting coastal texas. neighborhoods in surf side texas battered from the storm. how are the conditions right now? >> they're pretty bad the way they usually are. earlier today it was bad. that wind was coming. >> reporter: here in corpus christi, residents dealing with a storm surge up to four feet. >> the water is up to the dunes. it's not safe to be on the beaches currently. >> reporter: in rockport, texas, the storm dumped up to 10 inches of rain. the threat of flooding remains through south texas, as alberto makes landfall in mexico. now back out here in corpus christi, the worst of that rain

has already moved in land as the storm has now moved past us. michael? >> michael: thank you, melissa. turn to ginger with the track and timing and historic heat wave putting 16 states on alert. good morning. >> ginger: good morning. lots to talk about. what's amazing about melissa's shot and storm surge, hundreds of miles from the center. so it was pushing water that far. we're still going to see that on shore flow today as we see it make landfall throughout the morning hours. tornado watches still up. that includes brownsville and the coastal flooding because we're kind of squeezed between the big high that's doing all the heat. anywhere from mobile, even parts of mississippi there, alabama, coastal, going to see coastal flood alerts. it's all pumping moisture into the desert northwest. we saw flooding yesterday. more than half foot of rain in parts of new mexico. you had some flooding that kind of caused some stranded cars on this highway in new mexico. then in california, we are now at the point where this early in the season, they had a big start. five times the normal acreage burned so far. we're watching several of those

large wild fires. they've been wind driven, human caused, almost all of them. we look at the heat advisories in place from grand rapids and ft. wayne all the way over to maine. we're going to break that up for new england today. that heat dome is not going anywhere. just retrogrades and moves back so that the records here. nashville 99. sunday, even in oklahoma city, rebecca, 101. >> rebecca: 101 degrees. pretty wild out there. ginger, thank you. we'll come back to you in a few. to washington and serious tensions between israel and the biden administration in the wake of a very public accusation by prime minister netanyahu. our senior white house correspondent selina wang has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. sources at the white house tell me they're angry and frustrated with israel's prime minister netanyahu. his latest fallout started after netanyahu released a video this week, accusing the u.s. of withholding weapons from israel. but the white house said that's not true. that military aid continues to

flow to israel except for one shipment of 2,000 pound bombs. the administration official, they say what netanyahu did is beyond the pale. in response they cancelled a high level meeting with israel focused on security and a threat from iran. still top officials are coming to washington today meeting with national security adviser jake sullivan at the white house for more informal meetings. but, rebecca, it is clear that this administration's patience with netanyahu is running very thin. despite that, netanyahu is still planning to come to washington next month and give a speech in front of congress. >> rebecca: the meetings will happen very likely, but how will this impact the situation on the ground? >> reporter: yeah, rebecca. well, look, it is not helpful for israel to show that it has tensions with its main ally, especially when it's facing increasing threats from hezbollah. this administration is deeply concerned about escalations between israel and lebanon. in fact, the white house even sent a top aide to israel to

prevent this from turning into an all-out war. >> rebecca: thank you. whit? >> whit: turning to the american soldier sentenced to nearly four years in prison in russia. the charges against gordon black involved an alleged altercation with his russian girlfriend. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz is tracking the latest for us. >> reporter: the army staff sergeant went to russia on his own without permission from the military to see his russian girlfriend, and he is now facing years in prison. this morning staff sergeant gordon black jailed in russia for over a month, now sentenced to nearly four years of hard time in a remote russian penal colony. black, listening to the verdict from inside a glass cage. the multi-year sentence hand down just two days after the trial began. >> it looked like he was losing some weight. he looked kind of, almost like he was distressed. >> i am gordon black.

>> reporter: staff sergeant black was detained in may after traveling from his base in south korea to russia without permission from the military and without heeding the strong warnings about travel to russia from the u.s. state department. black's parents say he was there to see the russian girlfriend he met when she was working near his base in south korea. >> he didn't really want to talk too much about her. >> reporter: the visit apparently turned sour, the woman claiming she and black had a domestic dispute and accused him of threatening to kill her and stealing $115. in court, black said he did take the money but he denies all other charges. black's mother, who says she warned him not to go to russia, now worried about when he can return home. >> i feel like part of my heart's been ripped out and it can't be replaced until he comes back. >> reporter: this is a very

different case than that of evan gershkovich and paul wheelen. the u.s. has publicly said they are being unlawfully detained. officials have not made that determination about black, but will provide support and continue to review the case. michael? >> michael: martha, thank you very much for bringing that to us. now the supreme court and major decisions that are expected as early as today in key cases involving donald trump, january 6th and abortion rights. our senior national correspondent terry moran is at the supreme court with more. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it's the home stretch for the supreme court. the justices still have about 21 cases left to decide. that's typical for this time of year. among them, that blockbuster abortion kaeugs case out of idaho that bans abortion unless necessary to prevent death against a federal law that guarantees any person who comes to an emergency room gets emergency care even those rare and tragic cases when emergency care might mean the termination of a pregnancy. this is the biggest case since

it overturned roe v. wade and it could have an impact on abortions across the country. then presidential immunity. donald trump is claiming that he is absolutely immune from criminal prosecution for any of his actions trying to overturn the 2020 election, including january 6th because, trump argues, presidents cannot be prosecuted for any official act they took while in office. he said he was acting officially. there are hundreds of members of the mob that attacked the capitol on january 6th who say they have been improperly charged and their case is before the court. they say the law prosecutors used was designed for business and financial crimes. and there are also major cases on homeless encampments, on social media, regulating social media, on guns for domestic abuser. big news coming out of the supreme court in the coming weeks. rebecca? >> rebecca: some very high stakes decisions there, terry.

thank you. we turn now to that new louisiana law requiring the ten commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. will reeve joins us with more about it and the expected legal challenges. good morning, will. >> whatever your knowledge of or adherence to the ten commandments, those ethical imperatives inherent to judaism and christianity. if you're in a louisiana public school classroom, they're going to be up ton wall. that according to a new louisiana law requiring the ten commandments to be displayed in every public classroom in the state from kindergarten all the way through state funded universities by the start of 2025. the commandments must be on a poster size display with, quote, easily readable font and include a four paragraph context statement detailing how the ten commandments were, quote, a prominent part of american public education for almost three centuries, according to the legislation drafted by the louisiana gop. opponents say it's unconstitutional, that it's a melding of church and state. supporters say the purpose of the measure is not solely

religious. that the ten commandments have historical significance. >> rebecca: will, this is going to face immediate legal challenges. >> that's right, rebecca. previous efforts to require the ten commandments to be displayed in public schools have been shut down by the supreme court. legislators this time around hope that any suit brought before the supreme court would be met more favorably by its conservative majority. similar bills have been proposed in texas, oklahoma, utah but so far louisiana is the only state to turn the bill into law. >> whit: thank you so much, will. new this morning an urgent warning about potentially counterfeit weight loss drugs. eli lily saying fake and counterfeit versions could be dangerous. eva pilgrim is here to break it down. >> buyer beware. these popular weight loss medications can be hard to find and expensive. now eli lilly penning an open letter, urging caution for people looking to take these drugs.

this morning a drug maker behind some of the popular drugs used for diabetes and obesity, eli lilly warning about fake and compounded versions of their medications. with intense demand creating shortages and their high price tag, many people turning to compounding pharmacies and online searches to find alternatives. lilly writing an open letter saying it is deeply concerned with the online sale of fakes, saying they will never sell their medication on social media. sharing photos to help consumers see the difference between real and counterfeit products. real have purple injection buttons, federally trademarked logos, a triangular base cap and this trademark shade of gray and each has the lilly logo. currently there is a shortage of several doses of these weight loss medications, according to the fda, allowing compounding pharmacies to make and sell verges of the drugs. lilly testing some compounded

products saying they found issues ranging from bam bacteria, impurities and in one case a product that was nothing more than sugar alcohol. >> never inject yourself with something you bought off social media. the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves is to buy them from a reliable source. >> lilly urging people not to use these medications for cosmetic weight loss. the company also filing lawsuits against some compounding pharmacies they say are taking advantage of people looking for these medications. something people need to keep in mind. >> michael: beware of the fakes. all right, eva. thank you very much. we're going now to the damage at one of the world's most famous historic sites. two people have been arrested after spray painting stonehedge. lama hasan is on the scene. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael.

today is one of the most important days on the calendar for stonehedge. it is the summer solstice with celebrations starting tonight. it is open to the public today. but yesterday it was hard to see the climate activists spray orange powder on some of the stones. this morning one of britain's most famous historical sites covered in orange paint. watch as two climate activists run up to the ancient stonehedge, spraying fire extinguishers containing orange powder, vandalizing the 5,000-year-old monument. other visitors rushing to try to stop them. officers arriving on the scene arresting the pair on suspicion of damaging the ancient monuments. >> i think it's awful. there are better ways to protest. i don't think damaging historic site is the way to do it. >> reporter: the activist from wales known for their high profile protests previously making headlines for throwing

>> whit: as the historic heat wave is putting at least 16 states on alert right now. let's go back to ginger tracking it all. good morning. >> ginger: good morning. let's start with pittsburgh, where they've had power outages from storms because they've had a hot hot week. the heat is going to build back even more. not having power is not a good thing. look at yesterday's record from boston at 98, caribou maine at 96. they had their hottest heat index on record at 103. so those feels likes are going to be even hotter for con cord there in new hampshire at 98 for actual air temperature, 95 for augusta. this high, it retrogrades. it moves backwards and kind of expands to the plains. so nashville could see 98, which could be a record on sunday. oklahoma city 100. washington, d.c. 100. and pittsburgh you see them rising back into the upper 90s. then let's talk fires. california has already had quite the season. a really quick start. more than five times the acreage burned compared to the five-year average.

no comment this morning from kensington palace. rebecca. >> rebecca: an irreplaceable person. thank you. we turn now to beating the heat. today marks the first official day of summer with a sweltering heat wave spreading across the country. ginger's been talking about it all morning. and many people are worried about protecting themselves in the high temperatures. ginger's here to help keep us safe. great to see you. this is real. this can happen very easily. >> ginger: it happens easily. it happens a lot. we're seeing more heat deaths than ever before. it's really important to note the signs, which we'll get to. but today it's all about knowing, oh, i'm in an excessive heat warning. from ft. wayne, indiana, to augusta, maine this weekend that heat is still going to back track. this is day 3, 4, 5. heat is cumulative. even if you are in little rock or somewhere like raleigh or nashville, parts of kentucky could see records as well. don't spend as much time doing strenuous things outside. all makes sense, but we just go

on with our lives and forget. >> rebecca: you think you can do it, but you shouldn't. >> ginger: right. last summer alone where phoenix is, they had a record number of 645 heat deaths. a lot had to do with the length of time. they were breaking records for consecutive days of records. that's why we have to look at overnights. those have been warming nearly two times faster. in a city like detroit, 5.5 degrees is what they had in the overnight since 1970. >> rebecca: we were just talk. you experienced this. it comes on so fast. >> ginger: so fast it shocked me. i was doing regular things. i worked. i worked early in the morning, as we do. i carried my son around quite a bit. we weren't in excessive heat warnings. it was within minutes. that's the problem. your body can't regulate its own temperature. it can happen within 15 minutes where it goes above 106. so you'll feel nausea, dizziness. if you have heat stroke, which is the most dangerous type, you also could see a blistering rash, slurred speech. you could see people passing out. i does happen. >> rebecca: what can people do?
